Windhoek: Director of Health and Wellness at the One Economy Foundation, Dr. Veronica Theron, has labelled its recent collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) in delivering reproductive health services to rural communities across the country as vital.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the outreach, which took place from 16 to 20 June 2025, served the communities of the Kamutjonga, Andara, Shamangorwa, Korokoko, and Likwaterera areas, where sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services such as family planning and the dissemination of accurate information on various contraceptive methods are scarce and often hampered by a lack of healthcare workers. This intervention was necessitated by the region's high rates of teenage pregnancies and the limited availability of SRH services.
Theron told Nampa on Wednesday that the community turnout throughout the five-day outreach was a clear reflection of both the urgent demand for sexual and reproductive health and psychosocial support services, and the need for continued community-based interventions. Kavango East, a region grappling with a high number of teenage pregnancies and limited access to healthcare, saw community members receive over 2,400 services ranging from family planning, HIV testing, contraceptive injections, pregnancy testing, and SRH information and education, among others.
SRH information and education, family planning, pregnancy tests, and contraceptive injections were the most used services during the outreach. 'Collaborations of this nature are essential. The complexity and diversity of community needs, especially in rural and underserved areas, make it clear that no single organisation can work in isolation to meet the full scope of demand,' Theron said.
The foundation expressed appreciation to all their stakeholders, especially the Ministry of Health and Social Services, for the collective efforts, direct and indirect, that made the outreach a success.
