Windhoek: The Khomas Regional Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, the City of Windhoek (CoW), and other stakeholders, is set to host a series of activities on Friday to commemorate Namibia's 36th Independence anniversary. These events will take place under the theme 'NamFest@36'.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Khomas Governor Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma revealed on Wednesday that the celebrations will include an Uhuru March, an Innovation and Talent Show, and a music bash in the central business district of Windhoek. The Uhuru March, expected to gather around 1,000 participants, including learners, young people, and members of the public, will kick off at 09:00. The march will proceed from Palm Tree Park to Zoo Park, symbolizing unity, patriotism, and national pride. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes during this event.
Deputy Minister Dino Ballotti emphasized the initiative's focus on empowering youth through creative expression and active participation. Ballotti stated, "The Uhuru March, together with the planned activities, creates an opportunity for young people to showcase their talents and actively contribute to nation-building."
Zoo Park will host the Innovation and Talent Show from 11:00 to 15:00, led by local artist Top Cheri. Approximately 50 acts, spanning music, poetry, dance, visual arts, and innovation, will compete for a share of N.dollars 15,000 in prize money. Additionally, over 20 exhibitors from art, craft, clothing, and food sectors are expected to present their work.
The day's festivities will culminate in a music bash at the CoW parking area, beginning at 18:00 and continuing past midnight, featuring performances from over 20 local artists. Governor Nujoma remarked, "These celebrations go beyond commemorating our independence; they are about strengthening unity and encouraging meaningful participation from all sectors of society."
These events are part of the lead-up to the official Independence Day celebrations on March 21 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, where Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs Frans Kapofi will deliver the keynote address. Public attendance is highly encouraged.
