Windhoek: The Office of the Governor of the Kunene Region plans to bring small-scale miners, Exclusive Prospecting Licence (EPL) holders, Government representatives, investors, and equipment suppliers together to address the challenges faced by small-scale miners and help advance their operations.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the issues identified during a four-day regional mining inspection will form part of discussions among stakeholders at the upcoming regional mining conference, scheduled to take place from 07 to 09 October 2026. The inspection started on Monday and concluded on Thursday, covering small-scale mining operations in the Okaoko-Otavi, Ozonungu, and Otuani areas, as well as mines around Opuwo at Otjorungondo.
Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, personal assistant to the governor, Phillip Likando, said the inspections highlighted the realities faced by small-scale miners who depend on mining activities for their livelihoods. Likando noted that miners face significant challenges in commercializing their operations, particularly regarding personal protective equipment (PPE) and excavation equipment.
"Small claim holders are being exposed to very treacherous conditions. They need diversification in terms of their PPE, in terms of the equipment they need to excavate," he said. Likando pointed out that miners are using outdated methods, and some of the pits have become dangerous for people working in them.
He emphasized that the governor's office aims to find ways of bringing small-scale miners closer to commercialization and more standardized practices. This would require access to facilities, equipment, technology, safety measures, and financing to enable the miners to improve their operations.
Likando also mentioned that the regional approach should promote fair access to resources, fair use, and safety in a sustainable manner. He highlighted that some small-scale miners face difficulties due to a lack of necessary papers, which should be addressed collectively.
Likando called for EPL holders to collaborate with small-scale miners and stressed the importance of involving investors and equipment suppliers in efforts to find solutions for the sector.
