Large Scale Outages of Power and Mobile Network Disrupt Spain and Portugal

Madrid: A large-scale power and communications blackout hit Spain and Portugal on Monday, media reported. Electricity and mobile phone networks were cut off in hundreds of businesses and homes in many parts of Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, A Coruna, Seville, and other cities, at around 12:30 local time (10:30 GMT), Spanish broadcaster La Sexta reported. Power outages were also reported in Portugal.



According to Namibia Press Agency, serious disruptions were recorded in the operations of the Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport. The causes of the incident are still unknown, and authorities and energy companies are investigating the circumstances of the incident.



Spain’s National Cryptologic Center (CCN) is investigating whether the blackout was the result of a cyberattack, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported.
