Oshakati: The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Oshana Region have opened a culpable homicide case following the death of a 33-year-old man who was reportedly struck by a truck on the Oshakati-Ongwediva main road on Monday. The fatal incident occurred at 13h30 near Oneshila mini market when a Scania tipper truck, driving from Oshakati towards Ongwediva, allegedly hit the man.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the police regional commander, Naftal Sakaria, stated that the deceased reportedly ran into the road before the collision. 'It is alleged that the driver of the white tipper truck was travelling from Oshakati towards Ongwediva. While passing through the Oneshila area, the vehicle struck a man who reportedly ran into the road,' he said.
Sakaria further indicated that the deceased had allegedly been playing dice at a shebeen in the Ongwediva area the previous night, where he pawned his cellphone, his friend's cellphone, and a quantum trailer, amounting to an estimated loss of N. dollars 6 000.
The deceased, who is originally from Opuwo, has since been identified and his next of kin informed. Investigations into the matter continue. The 30-year-old driver, who is in possession of a valid driver's licence, tested negative for alcohol.
