Mental Health Takes Centre Stage at SOE Games

Swakopmund: Erongo Governor Natalia /Goagoses has urged Namibians to prioritise mental health and create safe spaces for open dialogue, warning that the country is losing too many young lives due to silent struggles. Speaking at the opening of the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Games in Swakopmund, /Goagoses called for collective efforts to support wellness and resilience.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the governor emphasized the importance of speaking openly about struggles, noting that silence has already cost the nation dearly. She highlighted the tragic loss of young Namibians, including youthful teachers who have recently taken their own lives. These individuals were not merely educators but also pillars of hope and providers of knowledge for the nation's children. The governor urged the audience to observe a moment of silence for those who have succumbed to mental health challenges and encouraged everyone to seek help when facing difficulties.

Namibia Airports Company (NAC) Board Chairperson Dr Leake Hangala underscored the significance of sports as a unifying force for public servants. He remarked on the process of creating platforms for Namibia's public servants to drive innovation and showcase their talents. Hangala expressed the honour of serving the people and country, particularly while representing thousands of citizens at the event. He praised Swakopmund as a vibrant host with a strong community spirit, leisure, and sporting culture.

Fluksman Samuehl, Chairperson of the Public Enterprises Forum, highlighted the role of sports in fostering teamwork and strengthening the mission of public enterprises. He noted that coming together in sports enhances unity and better prepares entities to fulfil the mandate provided by the Namibian people through their government. Samuehl mentioned that details about next year's sponsors and the 2026 SOE Games host city will be announced in the coming weeks.

Co-sponsored by the NAC and the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority, the SOE Games bring together thousands of employees from various public enterprises across Namibia to compete in eight sporting disciplines, promoting wellness and teamwork. The games are scheduled to conclude on Saturday.
