MultiChoice Announces Discontinuation of Showmax Service

Ruacana: MultiChoice Namibia (MCN): MultiChoice Namibia (MCN) on Thursday announced the discontinuation of its Showmax service, following a review of its streaming operations.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the decision, taken by the Showmax Board of Directors, follows losses incurred by the business. MultiChoice, a CANAL+ Company, said the move forms part of efforts to strengthen financial discipline and refocus investment within the streaming environment.

MCN Managing Director, Roger Gertze, said the decision reflects the company's intention to build a sustainable business over the long term. 'The decision to phase out Showmax reflects our focus on building a sustainable, competitive business for the long term in an increasingly demanding global streaming environment,' Gertze said.

The company said the discontinuation of the service will not result in retrenchments, noting that employees will be supported through various transition options. 'The decision to discontinue Showmax services will not involve any retrenchments. The Group will be engaging and supporting employees through various transition options. This evolution is also consistent with the ambition of MultiChoice, a CANAL+ Company, to deploy its in-house large-scale streaming platform,' Gertze said.

According to the company, CANAL+ will continue investing in content, innovation and partnerships to strengthen its market position. MultiChoice added that further details regarding content offerings and platform upgrades will be communicated in due course.
