Windhoek: The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) has called for increased investment in worker empowerment, skills development, and workplace safety as the country's mining sector continues to undergo technological and structural changes.

According to Namibia Press Agency, MUN Acting President Poco-Key Mberiuana stated in a media release on Monday that technological advancement, automation, and the global energy transition are reshaping the nature of work in the mining industry. Consequently, continuous learning and re-skilling have become essential for mineworkers. Mberiuana emphasized that the evolving industry demands that workers are equipped with the necessary skills to adapt to changing labor markets.

Mberiuana stressed that worker empowerment should encompass more than just wages and working conditions. It should also include education, skills development, and opportunities that prepare workers for the future of work. MUN underscored the significance of workplace safety, decent work, social dialogue, and fair labor practices. The union encouraged collaboration among government, employers, organized labor, and communities to achieve these goals.

Additionally, Mberiuana highlighted that responsible mining should not only prioritize mineral production and economic returns but should also ensure safe working environments, social investment, and community development. He noted that investing in workers is crucial for strengthening the industry, communities, and Namibia's long-term development.
