Windhoek: The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund and the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance emergency medical response and trauma care for road crash victims. The agreement was formalized on Thursday, setting a foundation for improved collaboration in handling emergencies related to motor vehicle accidents.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the MVA Fund highlighted in a media statement that the partnership aims to establish a collaborative framework for ambulance services, emergency medical response, transportation of injured individuals, trauma care facilities, and the ongoing treatment of those injured in vehicle crashes. The new agreement is expected to significantly bolster the continuum of care for accident victims.

Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, the Chief Executive Officer of the MVA Fund, emphasized the critical nature of timely medical intervention following a crash. She stated that the Fund's role goes beyond financial support, encompassing the enhancement of systems to facilitate swift medical care access for injured persons. Martins-Hausiku also noted that this partnership is crucial for overcoming the logistical challenges posed by Namibia's expansive geography, ensuring prompt medical services are accessible regardless of accident locations.

Dr. Esperance Luvindao, the Minister of Health and Social Services, remarked on the strategic importance of the agreement in fortifying Namibia's emergency medical response infrastructure. She pointed out that vital components such as ambulance services, trauma care facilities, emergency departments, intensive care units, surgical theatres, and head injury units are central to the nation's emergency care system.

The MVA Fund disclosed that a joint steering committee will be responsible for the coordination, implementation, and monitoring of the partnership. The institutions involved are tasked with finalizing a Service Level Agreement within 30 days, which will outline specific implementation arrangements and be supported by detailed annual workplans.

The Fund also mentioned that the collaboration is designed to allocate resources effectively to areas with the highest need, aiming to deliver tangible improvements in emergency response and trauma care services for road crash victims.
