Windhoek: The governments of Namibia and the United States of America announced a strategic plan to reduce US financial assistance for Namibia's HIV response. This decision comes in response to Namibia achieving HIV epidemic control and surpassing global targets.According to Namibia Press Agency, a joint statement from the Ministry of International Relations and Trade detailed that US support will shift from financial assistance to a technical cooperation model over the next year. This transition aims to integrate Namibia's HIV response fully into its sustainable national health system, in accordance with national laws.The announcement highlights Namibia's leadership in combating HIV/AIDS and its growing ability to sustain progress through nationally led systems. Namibia is among the first countries to exceed international HIV targets, with its response now predominantly funded and managed by its government.The statement noted that the Namibian government has consistently financed and procured antiretro viral medicines and HIV test kits, ensuring continued access to treatment and diagnostic services. US support has played a complementary role, investing in HIV testing, counselling, community-based organisations, and other health system interventions.Namibia's achievements include reaching 96-98-98, surpassing the UNAIDS 95-95-95 fast-track targets for HIV testing, treatment, and viral suppression. The country has also nearly eliminated mother-to-child transmission, with 97% of infants born to mothers living with HIV testing HIV-negative.Currently, more than 220,000 people receive life-saving antiretroviral therapy through Namibia's public health system. The country has developed national health information systems, laboratory networks, and supply chain mechanisms designed to sustain long-term epidemic control.
