Namibia Pushes Digital ID Vision

Windhoek: Namibia is moving closer to introducing a digital identification system that would allow citizens to access all government services using a single identification number, ICT Minister Emma Theofelus said on Wednesday. Speaking at the launch of Huawei Namibia's '1 000 Women in Tech' initiative in Windhoek, Theofelus stated they're working with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security to develop interoperable systems as part of the country's broader digital transformation agenda. "We are working towards a digital ID. One number that allows you to apply and get government services across the board," she said.According to Namibia Press Agency, the minister highlighted that Namibia is laying the foundation for a digital society through investments in connectivity, affordable data, digital systems, and skills development. She noted that the country's vast geography and dispersed population make digital connectivity critical to economic and social development. "Our country is quite u nique. We are just over three million people spread across a vast country, but everybody wants connectivity," she said.Theofelus added that Namibia's digital ambitions would depend on reliable infrastructure, energy security, and the reskilling of the workforce to keep pace with rapidly evolving technologies. She also praised Huawei Namibia for partnering with the government on initiatives aimed at improving digital access and developing local ICT skills. "A Namibian digital economy cannot be sustained without nurturing our talent, skilling Namibian youth and especially young women," she said.Speaking at the same event, Chairman of Huawei Southern Africa Yang Hebing said Namibia is well-positioned to accelerate inclusive economic growth through investment in ICT, innovation, and digital skills. He described Namibia as politically stable, with strong institutions, a young population, and a clear development framework under NDP6 and the National Digital Strategy 2025-2029.Yang said talent development woul d become one of Huawei Namibia's key strategic priorities from 2026, with programmes planned for all regions of the country. "Our talent development plan will strive to reach the whole country, covering all regions of Namibia," he said. He added that women remain central to technological advancement and reaffirmed Huawei's commitment to empowering women in the ICT sector. "Today, we are launching the 1 000 Women in Tech initiative. This is just the beginning," he said.
