Namibia on Monday received another consignment of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine, procured by government from the African Union’s (AU) Africa Medical Supplies Platform via the Africa Vaccines Acquisition Trust (AVAT).

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Ministry of Health and Social Services Executive Director, Ben Nangombe, said the 223 200 doses are the second consignment of the J&J vaccine that the Government of Namibia procured through AVAT and they are set expire in June 2023.

Nangombe stated that the Namibian Government remains committed to ensuring that sufficient COVID-19 vaccines are available in the country, adding that the ministry encourages all eligible Namibians to do their part in the fight against COVID-19 and get vaccinated.

He added that vaccines have proven to be effective at preventing severe COVID-19 illness and deaths.

“This is borne out by available data. Members who have not yet received their COVID-19 vaccine are urged to approach nearest vacation centres to get vaccinated. We must do everything in our capacity to protect ourselves, our loved ones and indeed, our nation,” Nangombe said.

To date, Namibia has administered 341 216 first doses and 214 530 second doses, leading to 276 612 people being fully vaccinated.
