Namibia scoops best competitor award, six medals at WorldSkills

The Best Award for WorldSkills Africa competition was awarded to Namibia’s Elizabeth Isai during the awards ceremony on Saturday night.

Isai, who also won the gold medal when she came in first position in the Cooking category, was one of the seven Namibians who managed to scoop medals at the just ended competition.

In an interview with Nampa, Isai said although she did not expect to win the gold, she knew she put in a lot of work.

“Being awarded as the best in Africa is indeed a great achievement and I am now looking forward to competing in the upcoming culinary competition in Abu Dhabi and then the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai,” Isai noted.

The other Namibian winners are; Antonio Hilzebecher and the duo Marina Iyambo and Natangwe Shikongo who all won gold medals in Electrical Installations and Mechatronics respectively.

Filipus Mwandingi won a silver medal in Automotive Technology, coming in second to his South African opponent Ceajay Bosman who got the gold.

Other Namibian winners include Asser Iipinge and Andrea Rooinasie who both won bronze medals in Welding and Hairdressing respectively.

Namibia’s Muhambi Reyeen Sikuza, Lifasi Sinvula and Sakaria Hofni each received a certificate of appreciation in Water Technology, Wall and Floor Tiling and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning respectively, as these categories only consisted of two competitors each.

South Africa’s Thulubheke Ncanana, Lungelwa Mtetwa, Hilke Minnie and Sphesihle Masina each won gold in Fashion Technology, Bricklaying, Hairdressing and Plumbing and Heating respectively.

Ncanana expressed immense joy for wining in a category in which he was the only male.

“I am very pleased that the hard work I put in my designs during the competition has paid off and I cannot wait to pass on my knowledge and skills to other fashion technology hopefuls back home,” he expressed.

Meanwhile, Democratic Republic of Congo’s Tshimango Mpoy and Ghana’s Luis Morgan were the only winners in the Joinery and Mechanical Engineering CAD categories respectively, with a gold medal each.

Ghana’s Manfuki Yao Agbo, Kenya’s Shradha Shah and Rwanda’s Janvier Nzeyimana each won gold medals in Web Technology, Restaurant Services and Welding, respectively.
