Namibia thrashed by South Africa at 3×3 wheelchair basketball

The South African 3×3 national wheelchair basketball team thrashed Namibia 21-01 in their second match of the 2022 Africa Commonwealth Games qualifiers in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday.

Namibia, Gambia, Kenya, Rwanda and host South Africa are competing in the Africa Zone’s qualification tournament for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games 3×3 wheelchair basketball.

The women’s category only has host South Africa and Kenya competing at the one-day championships that is being held at the Vodacom Mandeville Indoor Sports Centre in Johannesburg.

The winner of the championships in both categories will represent the zone in July next year in Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK).

In the match against South Africa, the Namibian team found the going hard from the start to the finish of the match. Namibia allowed seven goals in just three minutes of the opening of the match as their opponent forced them into unwanted errors.

Namibia only managed to score their single goal from a penalty with just four minutes left into the match through Roodly Gowaseb.

Despite all the attempts to find a basket from open play, their opponents were too physical and skilful for them.

Team coach Ryan Rahgoo who is based in the UK told the players via a WhatsApp voice note to keep their heads up for the next two games.

“We had a good game against Rwanda but made simple mistakes due to lack of experience against South Africa but that should not demotivate us, we must remain focused for the upcoming games against Gambia and Kenya,” he said.

Namibia’s next match will be against Kenya while the last game will be against Gambia at 16h00.
