Zambezi:The Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Frans Kapofi, has praised the Namibian and Zambian security forces for their efforts in the recently completed border clearance and de-bushing operation along the Namibia-Zambia border.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the operation, which began in July 2024, was a collaborative effort between the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) and the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), covering a stretch of approximately 120 kilometers from Katima Mulilo to Singalamwe. This initiative followed a resolution from the Zambia-Namibia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security, convened in Livingstone, Zambia, in April 2024.

In remarks delivered by Air Marshal Martin Pinehas at the closing ceremony, Kapofi noted that the operation extended beyond vegetation clearance to include surveys and boundary reaffirmation, despite facing challenges such as dense vegetation, extreme weather, and logistical hurdles. The security forces remained steadfast, demonstrating discipline and professionalism.

He highlighted that the operation showcased the NDF's engineering skills and tested its operational readiness under challenging conditions. A mine-clearance team ensured safety by locating and securing unexploded ordnance, including a mortar shell and machine-gun cartridge.

Kapofi also pointed out operational challenges, such as limited engineering equipment and frequent equipment breakdowns, and suggested that future operations should have dedicated budgets and pre-deployment preparations. He emphasized Namibia's commitment to enhancing security cooperation with Zambia.

Zambezi Governor Dorothy Kabula-Simushi urged for increased civil-military cooperation to combat crime and recommended deploying security personnel in the Liselo and Kamenga border areas.
