Windhoek: The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)'s Inspector General, Joseph Shikongo, announced that 18 police officers will be deployed to the Guinas Constituency in the Oshikoto region for the by-election on Friday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Shikongo addressed a press briefing on Monday, stating that the force is collaborating with the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) to maintain a secure and peaceful atmosphere during the by-election. The constituency will have 20 polling stations and 15 mobile stations. This election is being held following the death of Councilor Elias Marthinu in October 2024. Swapo and the Landless People's Movement are the only parties contesting the election.
Shikongo mentioned that routine patrols will be intensified and teams will be on standby for any eventualities. The transportation of election materials will be conducted under police escort and stored at Tsumeb Police Station for safeguarding, before, during, and after the election process.
He assured that the deployed officers are well-versed in police functions and are prepared to handle any challenges. The public is encouraged to refrain from carrying firearms and dangerous weapons, and to exercise patience and cooperation with election officials and security personnel. Additionally, the public is advised against visiting polling stations under the influence of alcohol.
Shikongo also warned against acts of violence, intimidation, or threats to public safety, citing recent social media posts by locals and some in the diaspora concerning the recent National Assembly and presidential elections.
