Helao nafidi: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged Namibians to view sport as a key economic sector rather than merely a recreational activity, saying it can create jobs, support livelihoods, and stimulate local economies. She made the remarks at the opening of the Helao Nafidi Sports Centre on Saturday.According to Namibia Press Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted that the contribution of sport to economic development is often overlooked, despite its growing global importance. She noted that the global sports economy generates an estimated N$36.92 trillion (US$2.3 trillion) annually, accounting for close to 2% of the world's gross domestic product. This, she stated, is evidence that sports are not only about trophies and entertainment; it is a powerful economic sector capable of creating careers, sustaining families, attracting investment, and stimulating many other areas of economic activities.The President pointed out that successful athletes across various sporting codes have shown how talent and discipline can create opportunities and improve livelihoods. She cited Namibian footballers, boxers, cyclists, and track and field athletes who have leveraged their sporting careers to support their families and represent the country internationally.Nandi-Ndaitwah further emphasized the importance of infrastructure development in unlocking potential, noting that talent can only flourish when athletes have access to adequate facilities and opportunities. She outlined the government's plan to establish basic sports facilities across all 121 constituencies to ensure young people in both urban and rural communities have equal opportunities to develop their talents.The President also stated that sports facilities can boost local economies through competitions, training camps, meetings, and cultural events that attract visitors and generate revenue for local authorities. 'A well-managed sports facility can host competitions, training camps, meetings, and cultural activities,' said Nandi-Ndaitwah, adding that su ch activities could diversify the revenue base of towns and support service delivery.She called on businesses and private sector partners to support government efforts to expand sports infrastructure, asserting that investment in sport is an investment in both people and the economy.
