Windhoek: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Thursday reiterated the government's commitment to pursuing recognition, justice, and reparations for the genocide committed against the Ovaherero and Nama people, saying the pain and impact of the atrocities continue to be felt today.

According to Namibia Press Agency, in her message marking the second national Genocide Remembrance Day, Nandi-Ndaitwah said Namibia remains committed to ensuring that the genocide receives the same recognition and moral attention accorded to crimes against humanity committed elsewhere in the world. She emphasized the nation's commitment to historical acknowledgment and moral attention to the atrocities committed against the Ovaherero and Nama people.

In that regard, Nandi-Ndaitwah said Namibia will continue engaging the German government until the issues of the genocide, apology, and reparations are resolved in a just and meaningful manner. The President further stated that Genocide Remembrance Day should serve as a unifying moment for Namibians to honor the victims of the 1904-1908 genocide and preserve the truth of the atrocities committed against the Ovaherero and Nama communities.

Nandi-Ndaitwah also highlighted the courage and resistance of those who stood against colonial oppression and injustice, noting that the survival and dignity of the people were under attack. According to the President, the genocide formed part of the broader history that inspired future generations during Namibia's liberation struggle, ultimately contributing to the spirit of resistance and national consciousness.

The President emphasized that the remembrance day is not only significant to the affected communities but to all Namibians. She called for a national day of remembrance, reflection, and learning, particularly for the younger generation, who must understand the painful history that shaped the nation and the sacrifices made for the Namibia known today.

Nandi-Ndaitwah further urged Namibians to set aside their differences and pay tribute to those who perished during the genocide. She noted that the day should serve as a moment for unity and homage to those who suffered during this painful period of history.
