Windhoek: Otjozondjupa Governor, John ||Khamuseb, has urged community members to actively participate in the proposed amendments to the Tobacco Products Control Act No. 1 of 2010. His call to action aims to address the increasing prevalence of harmful tobacco and nicotine products.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Governor ||Khamuseb, speaking at a national public consultation held at the Otjozondjupa Regional Council Chambers in Otjiwarongo, stressed the health risks associated with new products like electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and hookah pipes. He highlighted the need for robust legal frameworks to curb the promotion of smoking and safeguard public health.

Governor ||Khamuseb pointed out that the legislation, now over a decade old, requires updates to tackle modern substances and protect future generations from nicotine addiction. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among the government, traditional leaders, businesses, schools, and communities to protect young people from harmful products.

Thomas Shapumba, Chairperson of the national committee facilitating the consultations in Otjozondjupa, supported these views, emphasizing the necessity of public feedback in crafting legislation that reflects practical realities. He noted that the existing law's success in prohibiting tobacco sales to minors should be built upon.

Shapumba reiterated the purpose of the public consultation was to gather the community's perspectives on the Tobacco Amendment Act, ensuring the final legislation incorporates their insights and recommendations. The current Tobacco Products Control Act has effectively banned the sale of tobacco products to minors under 18 years of age.

The meeting in Otjiwarongo saw the participation of more than 50 individuals, reflecting significant community engagement in the legislative process.
