Navachab:Navachab Gold Mine reported a significant milestone, producing over 120,000 ounces of gold last year, which equates to more than 4,000 kilograms. This marks the highest production in the mine‚¬„¢s history, as stated by Managing Director George Botshiwe.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Botshiwe highlighted that the mine has progressively increased its gold output since its inception. Initially producing between 40,000 to 50,000 ounces annually, the mine has now reached an annual production of over 180,000 ounces.
Since it began operations in 1990, Navachab Gold Mine has produced just over 2.5 million ounces of gold, with current reserves estimated at around 2.4 million ounces. Gold was first discovered at the site around 1984, leading to the commencement of construction in 1988 or 1989, and full-scale production started in 1990.
The mine is currently evaluating the possibility of expanding its operations underground, with a final investment decision expected by the end of next year. Exploration activities are ongoing, both underground and on the surface, with over N$200 million invested in these efforts in the past two years.
Botshiwe expressed confidence in the mine‚¬„¢s future, suggesting that operations could continue for another two decades. A key focus for Navachab is to enhance local participation within the mining value chain, particularly by engaging Namibian businesses and small to medium enterprises (SMEs).
The mine aims to empower local businesses by integrating them into its operations through service provision and contract opportunities. Botshiwe emphasized the importance of SMEs, viewing them as pivotal to the future of the local economy.
