Windhoek: The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) has urged Namibians to transition from importing goods to fostering local innovations by enhancing intellectual property systems. This initiative aims to boost the creation and protection of homegrown products and services.According to Namibia Press Agency, Moses Moses, the NCRST Manager for Knowledge Management, Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer, emphasized during an engagement at the International University of Management (IUM) Nkurenkuru campus, the need for Namibia to identify and protect locally developed products and services. This protection is essential for generating income for both creators and the state. Moses highlighted the prevalent issue of Namibians primarily consuming products without venturing into production due to a lack of clear information.Moses explained that understanding the requirements for producing goods and services in Namibia is crucial, as the absence of this information discourages inn ovation and production. The NCRST is actively visiting educational institutions and regional councils to educate individuals on securing intellectual property and entering the marketplace.The engagement's purpose is to disseminate information related to research, science, and technology, equipping people with the necessary knowledge to produce commercially viable products. Moses noted that their outreach also includes practical steps on commercialization and export processes.Hosiana Hitanwa, Director of the IUM Nkurenkuru campus, supported the engagement, noting that it aligns with efforts to cultivate an innovation culture among students and staff. She stressed the importance of the relevant line ministry in accelerating the establishment of necessary structures to support this initiative. Enabling local innovators and online content creators to monetize their work, Hitanwa added, would yield broader economic advantages.
