Windhoek: Wavena Fishing and Processing Limited has officially unveiled four newly constructed flushable toilets at Okarukoro Primary School in the Epupa Constituency, Kunene Region. This development marks the end of a 28-year period during which students and teachers relied on the bush for sanitation.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the toilets, valued at N$56,000, were funded and constructed by Wavena Fishing as part of its corporate social responsibility for the school, which accommodates 135 learners from pre-primary to Grade 3, and employs five teachers. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Patricia Hausiku, a board member of Wavena Fishing, emphasized the impact of poor sanitation on students' health and academic performance. She highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector to address developmental needs.

Opuwo Town Council councillor Ruth Nderura, who delivered the vote of thanks, expressed gratitude to Wavena Fishing for the donation. She remarked that every gift, regardless of size, is significant when given with genuine intent to improve lives. Nderura encouraged more companies to follow Wavena Fishing's example by supporting schools and communities in need.

Furthermore, Nderura urged the school to educate learners on the proper use and maintenance of the new facilities to ensure their longevity. She highlighted the need for increased awareness among students to maintain the facilities in good condition. Nderura thanked Wavena Fishing for "remembering its community and investing in the school rather than focusing only on individual needs," underscoring the importance of giving back to communities and creating better conditions for future generations.

The official handover event was attended by education officials, community leaders, teachers, learners, school board members, and other stakeholders.
