The Head of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), Lieutenant General Sebastian Ndeitunga has expressed satisfaction with those members of the force going above and beyond to carry out their duties.

Ndeitunga, who was speaking at the official opening of NamPol’s Annual General Meeting at Swakopmund on Thursday, congratulated police officers who are working hard to impound contraband and fuel being illegally smuggled into the country, and arresting the culprits involved.

“We have been making strides in many areas. Police cells are congested with suspects arrested because of the efforts the police are putting in. This is worth congratulating you for,” the inspector general emphasised.

He added that he has also discussed with his Angolan counterpart to assist in making sure that these illegal activities along the Namibian-Angolan border are dealt with by the two countries’ forces.

Ndeitunga has however cautioned the management of the force of groups or organisations who act as vigilant groups and unlawfully interrogate business owners for labour-related matters, although they are not representing recognised trade unions.

“The government has put in place procedures to be followed when addressing complaints of employees wherever they are employed. Nobody supports exploitation of employees, but where there are cases of similar nature, procedures that are put in place by government need to be followed.”

Ndeitunga urged regional commanders to deal with those threatening them without following the right procedures.

“We should not allow chaos and anarchy as this is not the meaning of democracy. We should be a law-abiding society,” he warned.

He cautioned that the police will enforce the law and deal with those causing a disturbance within the business community without following the correct procedures.

The IG further said he was disturbed by a recent trend in which documents intended for internal consumption by the force are being exposed to social media, which he said affects the integrity of his office.

“This is due to lack of proper document security, filing, record keeping and/or statistics management. With this address, I direct that a drastic improvement should come into effect, and that the matter be addressed and that those responsible for document security be vigilant at all times,” Ndeitunga said.
