Windhoek: The Nedbank Desert Dash returns this Friday for its 21st edition, taking place from 05 to 06 December 2025. The iconic endurance race will once again see riders set off from the Grove Mall in Windhoek and make the gruelling journey to Platz Am Meer in Swakopmund.
According to Namibia Press Agency, more than 1,000 cyclists from around the world are expected to compete in what is regarded as the world's longest single-stage mountain bike race, a demanding 24-hour challenge across 401 kilometres of the ancient Namib Desert. A statement availed to Nampa on Wednesday by Nedbank Namibia quotes race organiser Leander Borg of LEMA Events expressing his excitement for this year's event.
Borg stated, 'Everything is falling into place at the right time. Preparations are going well, and we hope everyone who has entered shows up. The weather forecast looks favourable, with typical sunny conditions, and this year's editions build on last year's changes, which were widely welcomed by cyclists.' He added that the event's success would not be possible without the support of its sponsors.
'Organisers will continue to introduce innovations to ensure the race remains challenging and exciting. Cyclists will compete in the solo dash (half and full - male and female); the two-person team dash (half and full - male, female, and mixed); and the four-person team dash (full - male, female, and mixed),' Borg said.
Meanwhile, Nedbank Namibia's Chief Commercial Officer, JG van Graan praised the organisers for their commitment and creativity. 'I'm personally thrilled to be part of the four-man full-dash team alongside my dedicated Nedbank Namibia colleagues. I am also looking forward to hosting our Managing Director of Nedbank Mozambique, Joel Rodrigues, and commending his dedication to participating in the demanding two-man full dash. The participation of colleagues from Nedbank Africa Regions demonstrates how the Desert Dash continues to grow in stature,' Van Graan said.
Van Graan stated that the event brings significant economic value to Swakopmund, as cyclists, support teams, organisers, volunteers, media personnel, and fans gather over the weekend. 'The race plays a major role in developing cycling in Namibia by giving local cyclists the opportunity to compete against international athletes and gain valuable experience for global events,' he added.
The Nedbank Desert Dash is sponsored by Nedbank Namibia as the title sponsor, alongside Indongo Toyota, Hollard, Paratus, SuperSpar Maerua, and Grove Mall.
