Rundu:The Rundu Town Council (RTC) has been allocated N$75 million for infrastructure development and improvements during the 2025/2026 financial year, with an additional N$3.5 million designated for trading platforms for informal traders in the 2026/2027 financial year.
According to NAMPA, Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare made this announcement during the official opening of the ninth Rundu Annual Trade Fair. His call emphasized the need for improved municipal services, stronger business partnerships, and increased investment to stimulate economic growth.
Ngurare, who serves as the patron of the trade fair, conveyed his message through a statement read by Kavango East Regional Governor Hamunyera Hambyuka. The trade fair, which commenced on 23 October, is set to continue until 31 October 2026.
Ngurare highlighted Rundu's strategic position along major trade routes and its proximity to neighboring Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries as pivotal factors offering significant economic growth opportunities. He identified agriculture, timber, tourism, agro-processing, and cross-border trade as key sectors poised to attract investment and create jobs.
Furthermore, Ngurare emphasized the necessity of transforming these opportunities into tangible economic benefits for Rundu's residents, aligning with the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP 6) objectives, which focus on wealth creation, job creation, and reducing inequality. He advocated for moving beyond raw material production to encourage local processing and manufacturing, support existing businesses, and create more opportunities for youth participation in the economy.
Meanwhile, RTC Chief Executive Officer Olavi Nathanael reported that the current year's trade fair features 124 stalls and 224 exhibitors. He also noted that the council secured N$1.3 million in pledges, sponsorships, and in-kind contributions during a gala dinner associated with the trade fair.
Nathanael expressed the council's aim to bolster Rundu's status as a regional trade and investment hub while promoting sustainable and inclusive economic development.
