Windhoek: Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has raised concern over the growing disconnect between young Namibians and their cultural roots, warning that failure to preserve indigenous traditions could threaten national identity and social cohesion. Speaking at the Omagongo Cultural Heritage Fundraising Gala Dinner on Friday night, Ngurare said globalisation and modern lifestyles are increasingly pulling youth away from traditional values and practices.According to Namibia Press Agency, Ngurare emphasized the impact of globalisation, rapid urbanisation, and digital distractions on the younger generation. He noted that many young Namibians are losing touch with their cultural heritage, as parents, particularly fathers, spend more time socializing at cuca shops than engaging with their children around traditional fires. This cultural drift is evident in children receiving foreign names, struggling to speak their native languages, and gravitating towards imported foods, neglecting traditional Namibian cuisine.Ng urare expressed concern about the role of social media in further alienating youth from their cultural identity. While it connects them to a global audience, it also distances them from their roots and understanding of their heritage and future direction. He urged for a modernization of cultural preservation efforts, advocating for the production of locally driven, Afrocentric content to engage younger audiences. Ngurare highlighted the importance of adapting traditional gatherings to modern contexts, suggesting the development of television programmes that reflect Namibian culture and values.Ngurare also called on the government, traditional leaders, and the private sector to support young content creators who promote Namibian culture online. He emphasized their critical role in preserving the nation's heritage in the digital age.The fundraising gala aims to support initiatives such as youth-led cultural programmes, documentation of heritage sites, and the expansion of marula-based economic activities. These efforts are part of the broader theme of 'Embracing Cultural Diversity' celebrated through the Omagongo festival.
