Windhoek: The National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO) on Wednesday presented its political strategy aimed at resolving traditional disputes, promoting restorative justice, and modernising to ensure political relevance. The strategy was presented at the party's national council meeting in Windhoek.
According to Namibia Press Agency, NUDO, comprising over 90 per cent of Ovaherero Traditional Association (OTA) members, has consistently advocated for unity within the traditional framework. The Ovaherero people are divided between two factions led by rival paramount chiefs, following the death of advocate Vekuii Rukoro in June 2021. The Ovaherero Chiefs Council endorsed Professor Mutjinde Katjiua, while Dr Hoze Riruako was appointed by another breakaway faction led by OTA chairperson Vipuira Kapuuo.
Recognising the role of traditional leadership in cultural identity, NUDO has maintained a balanced approach, with its president Peter Kazongominja urging the rival OTA factions to reconcile peacefully through internal dialogue and mutual respect. 'NUDO respects the constitutional independence of traditional authorities and encourages all stakeholders to pursue solutions that strengthen unity, preserve customary traditions, and serve the best interests of our communities. Stable and respected traditional leadership remains essential for the continued development of our people,' he said.
Additionally, Kazongominja noted that the national council's focus on the 1904-1908 genocide highlights the lasting social and economic scars still felt by descendant communities. 'This painful chapter continues to affect generations of descendants through its lasting social and economic consequences. NUDO remains unwavering in its commitment to justice, historical truth, dignity, and meaningful restorative measures,' he said.
According to Kazongominja, the party established key requirements for future bilateral or multilateral resolutions, including the recognition of historical suffering by affected communities; active participation of descendant communities in all implementation and reparative processes; authentic restorative justice that fosters healing, dignity and sustainable development; and reconciliation based on truth, transparency, accountability, and inclusive participation.
Internally, the leadership developed a strategy to modernise NUDO into an agile political entity, enhancing its influence across Namibia's political landscape. 'The national council resolved that NUDO must continue strengthening its organisational capacity ahead of future political engagements. This includes revitalising our branches, expanding membership, empowering women and young people, improving policy development, modernising communication, and maintaining a visible presence within our communities throughout the year,' he concluded.
