Windhoek: Opuwo Mayor Kasipo Kakondo says the town council is making steady progress on key infrastructure projects aimed at improving water supply, sanitation, and road networks despite challenges affecting service delivery. Speaking to Nampa on Monday, Kakondo acknowledged that Opuwo continues to experience challenges, particularly water shortages and deteriorating road conditions. The council, however, remains committed to addressing these issues through ongoing development projects.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the mayor stated, "We are making steady progress in transforming Opuwo through strategic investments in water, sanitation, and road infrastructure. These projects demonstrate our commitment to improving the quality of life for every resident, and together we are building a stronger, more resilient town for future generations."

Water security remains the council's top priority, with eight new boreholes already drilled and bulk water storage facilities being constructed to strengthen the water supply. Kakondo added that the council is expanding its water distribution network through the installation of new water lines and rising mains to improve water pressure and ensure wider access. The main water lines are also being extended from the Otuzemba VIP area to the Shack Dwellers location to provide reliable water services to residents in growing communities.

On sanitation, Kakondo said the council is upgrading wastewater infrastructure through the construction of a new pump station at Okatuuo and improvements to existing facilities. A new sewer gravity main is being built to connect to the town's wastewater treatment plant, while a concrete precast wall is being erected around existing sewerage ponds to enhance public safety and hygiene.

Turning to road infrastructure, Kakondo said Chief Edward Mumbuu Street has been upgraded from gravel to interlocks as part of efforts to improve mobility in the town. He said the council, with support from the Road Fund Administration, is also re-gravelling gravel roads across Opuwo to address potholes and improve drainage. Road improvement projects are currently underway in the Etati location, while new gravel roads are being developed in the Shack Dwellers area.
