Opuwo: The Opuwo Annual Trade Fair 2026 was officially opened on Thursday with a strong call for sustainable trade and inclusive economic growth taking centre stage. In a speech delivered on his behalf at the opening of the trade fair, Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa, said the annual event has grown into a key economic platform for the region.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the trade fair, themed 'Sustainable Trade for Inclusive Economic Growth,' brings together more than 180 exhibitors, connecting entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers. Sankwasa stated that the event has evolved beyond a local gathering to become a 'regional economic institution' that enables small businesses to formalize, scale up, and access broader markets.
Sankwasa emphasized the importance of sustainable trade, which requires long-term thinking, innovation, and value addition. He noted that growth must be inclusive and benefit communities across the region, stating that trade should be resilient and future-oriented while development should empower people and preserve natural resources.
The minister also highlighted the role of governance in driving economic development, cautioning that growth without proper systems could lead to inequality and exclusion. He urged regional and local authorities to ensure transparency, proper land management, and fair access to opportunities.
The Kunene Region, according to Sankwasa, holds significant potential in sectors such as tourism, mining, livestock, and cross-border trade, which can be unlocked through strategic planning and partnerships. He also noted the inclusion of a career fair and innovation program as a step towards empowering youth and aligning education with industry needs.
Sankwasa concluded by encouraging stakeholders to turn opportunities into sustainable value chains and reaffirmed that Opuwo is ready for business, investment, and innovation. The trade fair began on 20 April and will conclude on 02 May 2026.
