Omuthiya: The Oshikoto Regional Council has intensified efforts to address persistent water shortages across the region through a series of infrastructure projects, borehole developments and strategic partnerships aimed at improving access to safe and reliable water.
According to Namibia Press Agency, in his State of the Region Address (SORA) in Omuthiya on Wednesday, Oshikoto Governor Sacky Kathindi said water security remains the region's most pressing developmental challenge and continues to be a priority on the regional development agenda.
Kathindi stated that the drilling and installation of boreholes have been prioritised in 12 areas within the Nehale Lya Mpingana and Guinas constituencies during the 2026/27 financial year. The targeted areas include Oshima West, Ongombehupa, Onghuumbwa, Ohainghete South, Oshiwambi South, Ondjamba, Alilo Post, Ambido Post, Okatope ka Haihonya Tesinki, Uukule, Bravo Gate and Amalyanga.
"These interventions are expected to improve access to safe and reliable water for households, livestock and other socio-economic activities in the affected communities," he said.
The governor further revealed that four mini desalination plants have been completed at Onelago, Otatashe, Akazulu and Oshikondailwa in the Eengodi Constituency. Training programmes are being finalised to equip community members with the skills required to operate and maintain the facilities.
Meanwhile, the upgrade of the bulk water supply infrastructure from Oshakati to Oshikoto is underway, including ongoing works at the Oniimbwele Reservoir. Upon completion, the project is expected to strengthen water storage capacity and improve water distribution across the region.
Kathindi also announced that his office has secured N.dollars 6.4 million from the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia to address urgent water challenges in some of the hardest-hit communities.
Additional interventions include the development of two boreholes at Oshivelo, the planned installation of booster pumps at Akaonde, Ombundu-Ambende and Onamutenya, and the revival of the Oshigambo Canal Project through collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister.
To further mobilise resources, the governor has initiated a fundraising gala dinner aimed at supporting sustainable water solutions and improving water infrastructure at community hostels across the region.
