Omuthiya: The Oshikoto Regional Police Funday Games officially got underway on Friday at the regional headquarters in Omuthiya, with officers encouraged to strengthen teamwork, wellness, and unity through sport and recreation. The games are scheduled for the Omuthiya Sports Field from 19 to 20 June 2026 and are expected to bring together police officers from across the region to compete in various sporting codes.According to Namibia Press Agency, speaking at the opening ceremony, Namibian Police Force Oshikoto Regional Commander, Commissioner Ndafudha Iifo, said the event provides an important opportunity for police officers to come together beyond their ranks and units. "Today is a special occasion that brings us together not as ranks and units, but as one family united by teamwork, friendship, and a shared commitment to serving our communities," she said.Iifo noted that police officers face numerous challenges in their daily duties, including working long hours, responding to emergencies, maintaining la w and order, and ensuring the safety and security of citizens. "These responsibilities can be demanding both physically and mentally. Therefore, occasions such as these are important because they provide us with an opportunity to relax, interact, and strengthen the bonds that unite us as colleagues and friends," she said.The regional commander emphasized that sport and recreation play a vital role in promoting healthy lifestyles, discipline, teamwork, and mutual respect. She added that the values learned on the sports field are the same values that guide officers in their policing duties. Iifo encouraged participants to compete with enthusiasm, integrity, and sportsmanship, stressing that the true purpose of the games is to foster unity, wellness, and friendship among members of the Namibian Police Force.Meanwhile, Omuthiya Senior Inspector Martha Shoopala highlighted the benefits of sports for police officers. She said regular participation in sporting activities helps officers maintain physical fitness, improve mental health, and manage stress associated with demanding police work. According to Shoopala, sports also enhance teamwork, communication, and discipline, qualities that are essential in effective policing. She added that recreational activities strengthen relationships among officers, boost morale, and contribute to a healthier and more motivated workforce.The games are expected to feature various sporting codes aimed at promoting camaraderie and healthy competition among officers in the region.
