Otumborombonga: The Otjozondjupa Education Directorate has officially received a piece of land from the Otumborombonga community in the Okakarara constituency for the construction of a new primary school. The land, covering two hectares, was handed over to Gerhard Ndafenongo, the region's education director, representing the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the initiative was prompted by the community's request, as children in Otumborombonga currently walk long distances to attend school in Okahitua, Waterberg, or Okakarara. Ndafenongo noted that while private donors would fund the new school, the directorate would oversee the process and provide essential resources such as teachers, books, and furniture.
German couple Thomas Stricker and Petra Knyrim have committed to financing the construction of the school, which will feature four classrooms, a storage facility, ablution facilities, and a teachers' office block, at a cost of 2.2 million Namibian dollars. The school, located approximately 20 kilometers east of Okakarara, will cater to students from pre-primary to Grade 7.
Otjozondjupa Governor John //Khamuseb led the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasizing the urgent need for the school to alleviate overcrowding at Waterberg and Okahitua primary schools. He proposed naming the new school after the late primary teacher Adelheid Kahorongo, whose family donated the land.
Jeaneth Kuhanga, sister of the late Kahorongo, expressed gratitude on behalf of the family for the government's acceptance of the community's request. "We are really happy that finally our wishes and prayers have been answered by our government, because our small children need this school the most," she stated.
Okakarara Constituency councillor Uzeraiije Tjaverua assured that his office would collaborate closely with the contractor to ensure timely completion of the school. He also mentioned that Otumborombonga is surrounded by 90 homesteads with an estimated population of 7,000 people.
