Parliament Renames Venues to Honour Former Leaders’ Contributions

Windhoek: Through the renaming of parliamentary facilities in their honour, the contributions of former Speakers, deputy speakers and parliamentarians to Namibia's democracy will continue to inspire future generations, Speaker of Parliament Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has said. She made these remarks during the official unveiling of venues in the Parliament building in Windhoek on Tuesday.According to Namibia Press Agency, in honour of the late founding Speaker of Parliament, the Chamber was renamed the Dr Mosé Penaani Tjitendero Chamber, while the library is now known as the Prof Peter Katjavivi Library. The Blue Room was renamed the Dr Zephania Kameeta Committee Room. The Pink Room was renamed Hon. Ignatius Shixwameni Committee Room. C1 was renamed the Dr Theo-Ben Gurirab Conference Hall.'Through these arrangements, we ensure that their legacy continues to inspire not only us, but future generations, reminding us all of the responsibility we carry to uphold democracy, peace, justice and viable progress, ' Kuugongelwa-Amadhila stated. She highlighted that the honoured leaders, with devotion to fairness and dialogues, assisted Parliament in navigating difficult periods.Also speaking at the event and offering words of encouragement to the new generation, former deputy speaker Kameeta insisted that leadership is about serving the people, not supremacy. 'Leadership or public service wherever you are is not about power and domination, it is about service for the people. For that, your memory will endure for generations,' Kameeta stressed, highlighting that serving the people will ensure one's memory is preserved.Former Speaker of Parliament Peter Katjavivi urged the nation to encourage the youth to prioritise education in order to acquire the skills needed in life. 'We also need to inspire our young people to feel the key to anything in life lies in our ability to have the kind of skills that will help us to open many doors,' Katjavivi said.
