Pensioner Faces Court for Shooting Elephant Without Permit

Katima mulilo: A 62-year-old pensioner is set to appear before the Katima Mulilo Magistrate's Court on Monday. The individual is accused of violating the Nature Conservation Act of 1975, as amended, by allegedly hunting specially protected game without a permit.According to Namibia Press Agency, the incident occurred when the pensioner reportedly "accidentally put down an elephant from a herd of four" that had entered his crop field on Saturday night at Makwatare cattle post in the Makanga area. The Namibian Police incident report indicated that the suspect encountered the elephants while patrolling his field.The police report states that the pensioner initially fired two warning shots into the air, but the elephants did not leave. He then fired another shot in the direction of the elephants, resulting in one being hit. The elephants subsequently moved away from the field and returned to the cattle post. It wasn't until Sunday morning that a cattle herder informed the suspect about the dead elephant, whic h he then confirmed upon visiting his field.Officials from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism were alerted, leading to an inspection of the elephant carcass. The inspection revealed a visible bullet wound on the left side of the stomach, consistent with a shot from a 30-06 rifle. The elephant was valued at N.dollars 295,000 as per the report.The pensioner is scheduled for a court appearance, and the case docket will be forwarded for the Prosecutor General's decision. Items including the rifle and the two recovered elephant tusks will be submitted as court exhibits.
