President Nandi-Ndaitwah Offers Condolences to Late Chief Justice Strydom’s Family

Swakopmund:President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah visited the family of the late former Chief Justice Johan Strydom on Thursday to express her condolences following his passing.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Strydom died in Swakopmund on 25 September 2026 at the age of 88. During her visit, President Nandi-Ndaitwah described his death as a significant loss to Namibia, highlighting his contributions to the country's judiciary. She emphasized that Strydom dedicated his life to serving the Namibian people and played a crucial role in shaping the judiciary after the nation's independence.

The President noted that Strydom's work in establishing a strong legal foundation was instrumental in strengthening Namibia's justice system and enhancing its international reputation. Strydom was appointed as Namibia's third Chief Justice in 1999, following Chief Justice Ismail Mahomed, and served until 2003. He then continued his service as an acting judge of the Supreme Court until 2015.

Strydom, who has been granted a State funeral, is scheduled to be buried at the Pionierspark Cemetery on Friday. President Nandi-Ndaitwah stated that the decision to honor him with a State funeral reflects his distinguished service to the country and his dedication to constitutional values, human rights, and judicial independence.

Strydom is survived by his wife, Lena, two children, and six grandchildren.
