Ondangwa: The family of slain prosecutor Justine Shiweda held a peaceful demonstration on Monday, during which they submitted a petition objecting to the granting of bail to the suspects in the murder case. The demonstration took place in Ondangwa, with the family appealing to the court to keep the accused in detention.

According to Namibia Press Agency, six suspects have been arrested and are facing charges of murder. They are currently held in custody at Oluno, Grootfontein, and Windhoek correctional facilities, while applying for bail. The bail hearing is set to continue on Tuesday at the Ondangwa Magistrate's Court. Family representative Elizabeth Nuukala read the petition aloud before handing it over to the prosecution, emphasizing that releasing the accused would not serve the interests of justice.

Nuukala highlighted the seriousness and brutality of the crime as central reasons for opposing bail. She described the circumstances of Shiweda's murder as extremely violent, noting that Shiweda was shot seven times and attacked with a corrosive substance. The family argues that the severity of the attack indicates a clear intention to inflict harm, warranting the continued detention of the suspects until trial.

The family contended that the murder was planned and coordinated, rather than a random act. Nuukala stated that the attack involved multiple individuals, suggesting deliberate coordination. This, they believe, necessitates the suspects' continued custody to ensure justice is served.

In her professional capacity, Shiweda's work in the justice system has been deeply valued, and her death has caused significant concern within the community. Nuukala argued that granting bail could undermine public confidence in the justice system. The petition also raised concerns about potential witness intimidation, noting that some State witnesses are known to the suspects, which could pose risks if they are released.

The family expressed ongoing fear and emotional trauma following Shiweda's death. Nuukala emphasized that releasing the suspects would escalate anxiety among family members and the community, as well as exacerbate the trauma experienced by Shiweda's children. The family maintains that justice requires the suspects to remain in custody until the case is resolved.

Shiweda was tragically shot and attacked with a corrosive substance on 17 October 2025, leading to life-threatening injuries. She succumbed to these injuries on 07 February 2026.
