Pretoria: The National Steering Committee responsible for the development of the Namibia Space Science and Technology Bill organized a one-day consultative meeting at the Zambezi Regional Council on Friday. This meeting was a significant step in the legislative process as the Zambezi Region became the 10th region to be consulted on the proposed legislation.According to Namibia Press Agency, the meeting was led by Dr. Lisho Mundia, the Deputy Executive Director for the Department of Higher Education, Training, Research and Innovation. Dr. Mundia emphasized that this effort builds upon Namibia's 2021 National Space Science and Technology Policy, which aims to leverage space technology for socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. The Cabinet had directed the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture in 2025 to draft the Bill. As part of the drafting process, the National Steering Committee conducted a benchmarking mission to South Africa to study its regulatory fram eworks, ensuring Namibia's legislation aligns with international best practices and obligations.Dr. Mundia explained that the proposed law is intended to establish a comprehensive framework to govern, develop, and promote Namibia's space sector. The goal is to ensure that all space-related activities are conducted safely and in a way that safeguards national interests. During the engagement in Katima Mulilo, presentations on the Bill were delivered by National Steering Committee member Sepo Kamwayamunzi and Advocate Hilda Kuduva. The presentations received praise from Katima Mulilo Deputy Mayor Charity Matongo-Mabuku, who saw the Bill as empowering for the local community and attendees.However, community activist Dobson Kwala expressed concerns regarding the limited time allocated for public review of the Bill. He stressed the importance of allowing residents ample time to review such significant legislation thoroughly. In response, Dr. Mundia acknowledged the time constraints and encouraged those interes ted in contributing to submit written feedback through their local and regional councils before the Bill is finalized.
