Otjiwarongo: The 40-year-old man who was arrested last week in connection with the possession of suspected stolen medication at Otjiwarongo was denied bail by the town's magistrate's court on Monday. Congolese national Adolf Ruburanga appeared before Otjiwarongo Magistrate Billy Lutaka on a charge of possession of medication suspected to have been stolen from the Otjiwarongo State Hospital.According to Namibia Press Agency, public prosecutor Wendy Nkando, who represented the State in the matter, strongly opposed bail as police investigations are still in the initial stages. "The State is also in the process of formulating and adding extra charges and therefore, it will not be in the public interest and that of the administration of justice for Ruburanga to be granted bail," said Nkando.Nkando and Ruburanga's privately hired defence lawyer, Kenneth Siambango, then agreed that the case be postponed to Thursday to allow the State to add new charges and allow for a potential plea to be entered. Ruburanga, who owns a tuck shop in the Orwetoveni residential area, was then remanded in police custody until Thursday, when he returns to court.Ruburanga was arrested after the Namibian Police Force responded to reports of a physical altercation he allegedly had with a woman who was previously employed as a health assistant at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital. Investigators allege the fight broke out over the splitting of profits from the illicit sale of stolen State medicines, baby formula, and nappies. The court learned that the former health assistant's work permit and employment contract expired earlier this year, although she has continued to work at the facility as a volunteer. The illicit inventory was being distributed through Ruburanga's tuck shop in the Orwetoveni residential area. Last Thursday, health officials officially inspected the shop and declared the dispensing and sale of these pharmaceutical products unlawful, unsafe, and unfit for public consumption. While Ruburanga failed to provide authorities with an explanation for how he obtained the government property, the exact financial value of the seized goods and the total extent of the hospital's losses have yet to be determined.Ruburanga remains remanded in police custody.
