Windhoek: Newly elected Swapo Party Hardap regional coordinator Else Umati has pledged to unite party members, strengthen structures at the district level, and ensure greater engagement with communities during her one-year term. Speaking after her election to Nampa on Monday, Umati described the position as both an honor and a responsibility, saying the confidence placed in her by Swapo delegates in the Hardap Region would drive her efforts to strengthen the party in the region. The election took place on Sunday in Mariental and was necessitated to find a new coordinator to continue the term of the late Joplin !Gontes, who died earlier this year.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Umati identified the immediate priority as uniting members across all party structures, listening to their concerns, and coordinating activities that strengthen the party while benefiting communities. "I want us to work together as one team and make sure that every district is active and supported," she said. The coordinator noted that delegates elected her because they recognized her as committed, approachable, hardworking, and willing to listen.
Umati emphasized that her leadership would be guided by the principle that leadership is about serving people rather than being served. Members can expect an inclusive, transparent, consultative, and accountable leadership style, where different views are respected and teamwork is encouraged. "I will respect different opinions, encourage teamwork, and make decisions based on what is best for the party," she stated.
The newly elected coordinator also pledged to remain connected with party structures and communities beyond election periods. Umati highlighted that regular community engagements, strengthening party structures, and encouraging greater participation by young people and women would be among her priorities. She further mentioned that the party needs to learn from its performance during the 2025 elections, identify areas requiring improvement, and rebuild stronger structures at the district level.
"I am not taking the support of my people for granted. Our strength must come from unity, service, and being present among the people," Umati concluded.
