Nkurenkuru: Kavango West Regional Council chairperson Fillipus Tenga has challenged the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (NORED) to urgently improve electricity supply in the region, warning that residents are growing impatient with years of slow network expansion and recurring outages. Speaking during a NORED induction session for newly appointed regional and local authority councillors in Nkurenkuru, Tenga said councillors are dissatisfied with the state of electricity distribution in the region.According to Namibia Press Agency, Tenga expressed that if the community is asked what they want from their leaders, the first thing they would mention is the need for electricity. He pointed out that students and residents are forced to study and operate small businesses in the dark, despite their willingness to pay for electricity. Tenga emphasized that NORED must expand the network and move beyond promises to tangible results, highlighting that NORED has been operating for more than a decade and should be closer to achieving full electricity coverage.NORED board chairperson Johannes Uushini acknowledged the concerns, noting that the town is still supplied through a rural electricity line that was never upgraded after Nkurenkuru attained town status. This leaves residents vulnerable to interruptions caused by faults occurring many kilometers away and underscores the need for a dedicated substation. Uushini emphasized that councillors and NORED serve the same communities, stating that access to electricity is an essential basic human need and crucial for social and economic development.Uushini urged councillors to work closely with NORED to ensure communities receive accurate information regarding electricity supply, tariffs, and operational constraints. He mentioned that sessions like this are intended to help leaders better understand the electricity value chain and support informed decision-making. The session aimed at strengthening collaboration, enhancing understanding of service delivery, and buildi ng a shared vision for sustainable community development.
