Windhoek: TransNamib and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) have initiated steps to expand the movement of containerised cargo by rail between Windhoek and Walvis Bay. This development follows a soft launch on 05 August 2026 at TransNamib's WINCON depot in Windhoek, marking the start of a collaborative effort to increase the use of rail for container cargo transportation.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the collaboration involves MSC, a global shipping company, and TransNamib, the client, utilizing the WINCON facility to facilitate container cargo movements between the two cities. Both companies are assessing opportunities to increase cargo volumes and explore additional routes. TransNamib Executive for Commercial and Marketing, Kendall Swartz, emphasized that the collaboration strengthens the role of rail in Namibia's intermodal freight sector.

"This collaboration with MSC is an important step in strengthening the role of rail in Namibia's intermodal freight landscape," said Swartz. He highlighted that working closely with clients creates opportunities to grow container volumes on rail, improve connectivity between Windhoek and Walvis Bay, and provide more efficient rail-based freight solutions.

The initiative coincides with the recent expansion of the Namport Container Terminal, which TransNamib noted presents further opportunities for the growth of containerised cargo movement. The statement by the two companies indicated that the collaboration will focus on efficient rail movement of container cargo while exploring opportunities to support the growth of rail-based freight in the country.

An official launch of the collaboration will be announced at a later stage.
