Tsumeb: The SOS Children's Village in Tsumeb has made significant strides in supporting over 3,000 participants since 2023, focusing on children in need of care and protection.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the organization's regional manager, Teopolina Haitembu, highlighted their commitment to providing humanitarian and development assistance to children who are orphaned, abandoned, or at risk of losing parental care. Their efforts aim at offering long-term support in childcare, health, well-being, and education.
Haitembu noted that many children under their care have been with them since infancy, while others joined after losing parental support. Since 2023, their alternative care programs have housed 158 children from various regions, supported by family strengthening initiatives within the community. These initiatives are backed by different projects designed to ensure the children's welfare.
The Tsumeb center also supports the education of five young individuals currently studying at various institutions nationwide. The village's 10 family houses have provided shelter to over 100 children each. Additionally, four accommodation houses have been reserved for students from local institutions, addressing the dropout rates caused by housing issues. Discussions with stakeholders are ongoing to further support student housing needs next year.
Notably, one former SOS member has established a small bakery business, employing two individuals and contributing to reducing unemployment. Various projects under the organization aim to support young people in staying in school and starting businesses post-university. Haitembu urged all Namibians to unite in helping the country's children achieve their dreams.
