Zambezi Region, Namibia – Two individuals have been arrested in connection with elephant poaching in the Zambezi Region, as confirmed by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) on Monday.
According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), The ministry’s spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda, reported that the suspects were apprehended with 15 elephant tusks at Namandumo village. The arrest was part of an intelligence-led operation. Muyunda explained that the two arrested individuals were part of a group of seven suspects who had allegedly returned from a poaching expedition in Botswana, with the other five suspects evading arrest. This incident follows another recent poaching case in the Zambezi Region on November 24, which resulted in the recovery of 24 tusks and the arrest of one suspect. Muyunda praised the anti-poaching unit in Zambezi, comprised of the Namibian Police Force and MEFT officials, for their effective work. He emphasized the unit’s strong intelligence base, which has been instrumental in these arrests. Muyunda’s statement served as a warning to those involved in wildlife crimes, stating that such illegal activities will lead to arrest and prosecution under Namibian law.
