New york: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomes the commitment of China and the European Union (EU) to strengthen cooperation on climate change and drive the global just transition, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the UN chief, on Thursday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the Secretary-General emphasized the importance of collaboration between China and the EU, as they are two of the world's largest economies. He believes their joint efforts are crucial for ensuring that COP30 in Brazil becomes a pivotal moment in the global fight against the climate crisis. Haq conveyed this sentiment in a statement, highlighting the need for continued cooperation between the two powers.
"The Secretary-General reiterates his call to all G20 countries to present 2035 NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) that are economy-wide, cover all emissions, align with the 1.5-degree goal and define a credible pathway to transition away from fossil fuels as agreed at the first Global Stocktake," Haq stated, underscoring the urgency of comprehensive climate action.
The announcement follows a joint statement on climate change issued by leaders of China and the EU after the 25th China-EU Summit in Beijing. The statement recognized that enhancing China-EU cooperation on climate issues will significantly impact the well-being of people on both sides and holds special significance for promoting multilateralism and advancing global climate governance.
