UN Launches ‘Building Brighter Tomorrows’ Project in Mpungu

Mpungu: The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and the Commonwealth in Namibia launched the 'Building Brighter Tomorrows' project at Hausiku Selma Nangura Combined School at Gava in the Mpungu Constituency on Friday. The initiative aims to deliver integrated health, protection, nutrition, and education support to vulnerable learners and surrounding communities.According to Namibia Press Agency, the project is a joint effort co-funded by the Commonwealth, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the World Food Programme (WFP). It targets 400 learners, service providers, and community members, providing enhanced school meals, revitalized fresh-produce gardens, a poultry house for protein supply, and dignity kits for 80 vulnerable learners. Additionally, the project includes integrated mobile outreach for sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response, screenings, vaccinations, and psychosocial support.UN Resident Coordinator Hopolang Phororo highlighted the pro ject's focus on purposeful partnerships to align food security, health protection, education, and community resilience. The goal is to ensure that no child is too hungry to learn, utilizing a reliable, home-grown school feeding model.UNFPA Country Representative Erika Goldson noted the project's tangible impacts, including dignity kits, improved meals, a revitalized garden, and a poultry house for 223 learners. She emphasized that the integrated services link nutrition with health and psychosocial support, fostering ownership among parents, teachers, and local leaders.WFP Country Director Simon Denhere emphasized that success would be measured by the quality and reliability of the meals, stressing that no child should be too hungry to learn. The garden and poultry projects are designed to supply fresh vegetables and protein directly into the school feeding program while strengthening local food systems against drought and rising costs.Speaking on behalf of the Commonwealth and missions, Zambian High Com missioner Stephen Katuka described the launch as a commitment to collective accountability, focusing on the impact of uplifted communities. He called for ongoing collaboration under the UN Cooperation Framework and Agenda 2063.Kavango West Governor Verna Sinimbo expressed that the project demonstrates the potential to overcome barriers and create meaningful change through collaboration. She urged that the facilities be utilized effectively, maintained responsibly, and complemented by quality teaching, strong leadership, and active community involvement.
