UNAM FC eliminating trial system

University of Namibia (UNAM) Football Club head coach Ronnie Kanalelo has said his goal is to build a team that can be competitive in league and other competitions.

Kanalelo said this in an interview with Nampa after his team managed to collect six points and win their first back-to-back matches for the 2022/23 Debmarine Namibia Premiership over the weekend.

The UNAM coach said they have been building their team since the start of the season and things are starting to fall into place.

“We have a long-term project as UNAM FC and eventually we want to eliminate the trial system at the club. But the first thing we have to do is identify players who can fit into our plans and those who can’t fit into our plans, we can ship them out,” he said.

Kanalelo added that the football club’s goal is to build a team that will be able to challenge for the title and therefore they need to identify a group of players who can buy into their dream.

“If you look at the games we had over the weekend there are players who gave it their all but some found the going tough, and if a player doesn’t have it in them they just don’t have it. There is nothing else you can do but let them go and find someone who can buy into your ideas,” Kanalelo said.

After six fixtures in the 2022/23 Debmarine Namibia Premiership, UNAM are eighth on the log standing with nine points. Blue Waters, who have played seven games, are top of the log with 14 points.

The bottom of the log is occupied by Young African, Black Africa and Citizens. Young African are 14th with four points, while Black Africa and Citizens are 15th and 16th on a single point each from five and six games played respectively.
