War Veteran Guiteb Accorded Official Funeral

Windhoek: The Office of the President has conferred an official funeral upon war veteran Lazarus Guiteb, who passed away in hospital in Windhoek on 15 July 2025 after two weeks of medical treatment. He was 82 years old.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Guiteb was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1977 to 1984. During his eight years in the South African prison, he was incarcerated alongside the late Herman Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, Ben Ulenga, Michael Shikongo, and Ruben Itengula. Guiteb was also a member of the Robben Island Prisoner Trust Fund.

His daughter, Fina Sakajengenga, informed Nampa on Wednesday that the family has accepted the offer of an official funeral. 'We appreciate the Presidency's Office for this recognition of our father,' Sakajengenga stated.

Guiteb will be laid to rest on 02 August 2025, at the new Orwetoveni cemetery in Otjiwarongo.
