Windhoek: Vice President Lucia Witbooi on Wednesday visited the Hai//Om San communities living in and around the Etosha National Park to assess first-hand the daily challenges they face. Guided by the Office of the Vice President's mandate to coordinate government initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of San and other vulnerable communities, the vice president's delegation sought direct dialogue with local residents and leadership.According to Namibia Press Agency, Witbooi's itinerary included visits to Ombika, situated inside the park near the Okaukuejo gate, as well as the Seringkop Government Resettlement Farm, which serves as the headquarters of the Hai//Om San Traditional Authority. "After visiting your communities today we will gather in Outjo for a community meeting to discuss your concerns along with my delegation, which includes Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, the governors of Oshana and Kunene regions, as well as their constituency councillors," she said.Accompanying the vice president were, amongst others, Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge; Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President Moses //Khumub; Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism Indileni Daniel; Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture Sanet Steenkamp; Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare Linda Mbwale; and Kunene Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua. The newly installed traditional leader of the Hai//Om San Traditional Authority, Chief Alfred ||Khamuxab, also attended the community meeting at Seringkop on Wednesday.Community members presented a range of concerns, including high unemployment among the Hai//Om San living near Etosha National Park, the suspension of an electrification programme by the Central North Regional Electricity Distributor (Cenored), the alleged mistreatment of Ombika residents by Etosha National Park officials, and poor service at the Okaukuejo clinic.In response to these concerns, Rebekka Namwandi, Deputy Director for Marginalised Communities in the vice presi dent's office, assured residents that every issue raised would be addressed during the follow-up meeting set to take place in Outjo on Thursday. She encouraged all community members to participate in the meeting in order to voice any remaining concerns and seek clarification on planned government support measures.
