Windhoek: Namibia's 51kg female boxer Mischa Monique Araes and her male counterpart in the 60kg division, Tryagain Morning Ndevelo, became the second and third athletes to secure medals for the country at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The two boxers, who stepped into the ring at the Scottish Event Centre (SEC) Wednesday night against opponents from Sri Lanka and Guernsey respectively, have now set their sights on gold after booking places in the semi-finals and guaranteeing themselves at least bronze medals.According to Namibia Press Agency, the 18-year-old Araes made an impressive Commonwealth Games debut, outclassing 35-year-old Sri Lankan Nadeeka Ranasinghe in her first appearance at the Games. She delivered a composed and disciplined performance to advance to the last four. Despite dominating the three-round contest, Araes was penalised in the second round for keeping her head too low. However, the deduction did little to affect the outcome, as she claimed a split-decision victory, with four judges scoring the bout in her favour while the fifth declared it a draw.Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games veteran Ndevelo kept his dream of winning a Games medal alive after producing another commanding performance. He comfortably defeated Guernsey's Niall Adams, with all five judges awarding him the contest for a unanimous 5-0 victory.Speaking to Nampa after her win, Araes credited her success to the support of her family, coaches and faith. 'First of all, I have to thank the Almighty God who made this possible. I would also like to thank my parents for allowing me to come here, and my coaches who keep pushing me every day. This is a great achievement for me as a boxer,' she said. Araes said she hopes her achievement will inspire more young girls to take up boxing.Having secured at least bronze medals, Araes, Ndevelo and Philip !Haoseb in the 55kg division are now just one victory away from reaching their respective finals. Under Commonwealth Games rules, all losing semi-finalists receive bronze meda ls. The trio will return to the ring on Friday. !Haoseb will face India's Jadumani Singh Mandengbam in the semi-finals at 16h45, Araes will take on England's Ruby White at 20h15, while Ndevelo will meet Northern Ireland's Jude Gallagher at 21h15, all times Namibian.
