Windhoek: Kaleido Logistics and TransNamib launched the Walvis Bay-Karibib rail corridor and opened a new logistics hub in Karibib, describing it as part of efforts to strengthen freight transport and improve supply chain efficiency in Namibia.
According to Namibia Press Agency, a media statement issued on Thursday highlighted that the new logistics hub, located alongside the railway line with direct access to TransNamib's rail infrastructure, will support cargo handling, storage, loading, unloading, and transshipment operations. The statement noted that this new facility complements Kaleido's existing logistics centre in Walvis Bay.
The companies said the facility will facilitate the consolidation of marble, granite, and other commodities for rail transport, providing a cost-effective alternative to road haulage. The rail corridor is expected to transport up to 25,000 tonnes of freight per month, the equivalent of about 735 truckloads, reducing traffic on the country's roads, lowering carbon emissions, and easing pressure on road infrastructure.
Kaleido Logistics Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Xo¡n Martnez noted that the launch of the corridor and logistics hub strengthens the company's presence in Namibia and expands its integrated logistics network across southern Africa. Martnez expressed that building on their rail operations in Angola, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, the new corridor is seen as a competitiveness driver for Namibia, with ambitions for the service to be just the beginning.
Commenting on the launch as well, TransNamib CEO Desmond van Jaarsveld said the partnership reflects the company's commitment to repositioning rail as the backbone of Namibia's freight transport network. He emphasized that the Walvis Bay-Karibib Rail Corridor not only enhances supply chain efficiency for customers but also contributes to reducing road congestion, lowering carbon emissions, and supporting Namibia's broader economic growth agenda.
The companies said the corridor is based on a cargo consolidation model that integrates rail, road, and ocean freight services to improve the movement of both bulk and containerized cargo. Kaleido Logistics and TransNamib are expected to officially present the new rail service at the Namibia Mining Expo and Conference, scheduled to take place in Windhoek in August.
